I want to receive a voluntary insurance

You can insure voluntarily yourself:

  • under social insurance for sickness benefits;
  • under social insurance for sickness and maternity benefits.

You can conclude a voluntary insurance contract by logging into your personal "Sodra" account or by applying to the "Sodra" department.

  The contract is concluded for one calendar year. The "Sodra"  will inform you in writing about the law that has entered into force or changed.

  If the person insured by voluntary social insurance does not notify in writing to the "Sodra" about termination of the insurance contract before the expiry of the original insurance contract, its validity is extended to other calendar years.

You may insure for these benefits if you are a permanent resident of Lithuania, another EU Member State, an EEA State, a Swiss Confederation, you are at least 16 years old and:

  • You are not compulsorily insured under sickness and maternity social insurance in Lithuania, another EU Member State, the EEA State, the Swiss Confederation.
  • Do not raise the retirement age.
  • You are not recognized as incapacitated or partly capacitated for work (invalid) regardless of whether you have been granted a pension.

If you are a man, you can conclude an insurance contract for receiving a sickness benefit.

If you are a woman, you can conclude a contract for receiving sickness and maternity benefits.

Insurance contracts are concluded by logging into your personal "Sodra" account or upon arrival at the "Sodra" department.

Once you have concluded a contract, you will have to choose the amount of your contribution for the calendar year, as voluntary insurance contracts for sickness and maternity benefits are concluded for one year.

 

 The annual contribution rate cannot be:

  • Less than 2.90 Euro per month.
  • Greater than 57.92 Euro per month.

 

  Contributions for benefits are paid at least once a quarter. They must be paid no later than on the last working day of the current quarter.

  For example: contributions for the first quarter of 2019 were due by 29 March 2019.

 

Contribution codes for receiving sickness and maternity benefits:

  • Contributions – 270.
  • Fines - 271.

 

When you insure yourself, you can pay contributions:

  • Using electronic banking.
  • At a post office.
  • In a credit institution.

 

  The contributions are paid into the "Sodra" accounts.

When paying contributions, it is mandatory to indicate the contribution code. Without specifying a code, the contribution may "get lost" and will not be charged, and the payer will be charged with debt and interest is calculated.

Contributions for sickness and maternity benefits must be paid for the entire calendar month. Monthly contributions are not changed in the same calendar year.

There is no need to pay contributions for sick leave. If you have not paid your contributions for the months of your sickness, the calendar months of sickness are not included in your insurance contributions.

Sickness benefit shall be paid only in the event of illness or injury of the insured person himself or herself.
  • Benefits shall be granted and paid if the temporary incapacity for work started not less than 6 months after the entry into force of the voluntary insurance contract and the voluntary insurance contributions for this period have been paid.
  • The allowance may be paid if it is applied for within 12 months of the end of the illness or of the end of the pregnancy and childbirth leave.
  • Benefits which belong to the insured person and which he/she has not received as a result of his/her death shall be paid to persons to whom the estate of the deceased person passes through the succession procedure when they present a certificate of succession.
  • Benefits are provided and paid by Sodra on the basis of electronic certificates of incapacity for work or on the basis of electronic certificates of pregnancy and childbirth leave.

When you are covered by a voluntary insurance for sickness and maternity benefits, you are entitled to:

  • receive a sickness benefit when you are sick or injured;
  • receive a maternity benefit for the period of pregnancy and childbirth leave.

 

The sickness or maternity benefit is paid if it is applied for within 12 months of sickness or pregnancy and maternity leave.

Sickness and maternity benefits are granted and paid if temporary incapacity for work or maternity leave began at least six months after the entry into force of the insurance contract and contributions have been paid for this period.

Benefits not paid to the deceased person are paid to the insured's relatives who inherit the deceased's property.

The contract may be terminated if:

  • you do not pay any contributions for 2 quarters. In such case, the "Sodra"  terminates the contract by the decision of the director of the office;
  • the terms and conditions  of the contract change and when you assess information about such changes provided by the "Sodra" department, you do not agree with them;
  • you become incapacitated or partly capacitated for work, also when you are at pension age;
  • at your initiative, by giving a notification in writing to the "Sodra" department with which you concluded a contract.
